In this lesson, through hands-on activities, we first discover that colour is a property of light. The students create, following the instructions of the teacher, their colour wheel, understanding how colours relate to each other and the meaning of primary, secondary, tertiary and complementary colours. The students memorize the terms related to colours through a crossword puzzle and interactive activities. We focus on how artists use value to suggest emotion and mood, shading or chiaroscuro to make a flat shape look 3-D and how they relate warm and cold colours to express feelings. After this breakthrough activities, they can now explore mixed colours, composing a series of geometric designs based on colour types, applying the theory. They can take inspiration from the style of Robert Delaunay, French painter cofounder of the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colours and geometric shapes. The students can choose to create a design based on warm and cold colours, or primary, secondary, tertiary and complementary colours, they can practice the interactions between colours or the technique of chiaroscuro. Finally, they have to explain in English their choice and the meaning of their composition.
